Trump Announces White House Bid for 2024 - The Former President’s Personality “Type” & What Makes Him Tick

Updated on 26th November, 2022

On November 15th, former President Donald Trump announced to a crowd gathered at Mar-a-Lago, his oceanfront estate in Florida, that he wants to “make America great and glorious”—“again”—by seeking the 2024 presidential nomination for the Republican Party. No President in U.S. history has ever served two non-consecutive terms and although the former President likes to avoid highlighting—and admitting—that he lost the 2020 election to Biden, it’s very likely that the prospect of breaking a record appeals to him.

In true Trump form, the former President reminisced about his 4-years in the White House, comparing his accomplishments during his presidency to those of President Biden thus far. He also mentioned how the Republican Party should not nominate “a politician or conventional candidate.” We all know after 4 years of Trump that he is not the traditional politician turned President that we’re accustomed to—and he’s definitely far from conventional. It’s safe to say that Trump broke—and shattered—the U.S. President mold.

However, it seems that this is precisely what Trump’s mass following likes most about him—the fact that he’s not a politician and that he’s been calling out the “massive corruption” in Washington since prior to his Presidency. In fact, a big part of Trump’s 2020 campaign was based on promoting a change to the status quo in the White House and in our government—a change that he vowed to usher in when he becomes President. Trump didn’t leave the stage on November 15th without briefly mentioning his beliefs about why he lost to Biden in 2020, complete with remarks about how the election was stolen from him.

The one-hour speech provided Americans with a flashback of the many remarks—and conspiracies—that led to much controversy for the former President, both prior to and during his presidency. Like him or not, Trump is very much a “what you see is what you get” individual. True to form, he does little sugarcoating and seems to just blurt out his opinions with little censoring or concern for being potentially offensive or inappropriate. I suppose in many ways, you can say he’s rather honest in terms of sharing what’s on his mind and letting Americans know his beliefs and what he has in store for the nation should he get reelected in 2024. Below we’ll discuss these and the many other personality traits and characteristics that make Trump, Trump.

1. He loves an audience.

If you observe former President Trump on stage, giving a speech, or informally addressing a crowd, you’ll get a front-row seat to one of the primary situations that really makes him tick. He loves attention and he loves putting on a show. In fact, if you pay attention, Trump addresses the crowd in a manner similar to a stage performer.

He tells jokes—often at others’ expense—uses sarcasm, and often repeats words and phrases, very similar to that of standup comedy. Many believe that his strength is not in business or entrepreneurship, but in entertainment. He’s an entertainer through and through and if you observe closely, you’ll notice how he truly enjoys himself when he's up there riling up a crowd.

3. Highly competitive or sore loser?

It’s no secret that Donald Trump doesn’t like to lose. He dislikes losing so much that he simply will not accept a loss. Trump received a lot of public criticism and backlash in 2020 and 2021 for his conspiracy theory about the election being rigged and “stolen” from him. He was blamed by many for inciting the January 6, 2021 insurrection, which was triggered by his conspiracy about the Democrats essentially cheating in order to get him out of the White House.

Oftentimes, people who hate losing are ambitious and highly competitive. They don’t let failure bring them down. In fact, it seems as if failure further fuels their desire to keep fighting. The downside, however, is coming across as a sore loser—as someone who lacks the emotional maturity to accept defeat.

4. Is he really a narcissist?

We can’t compile a list of Trump’s most prominent personality features without mentioning narcissism. Yes, Trump has been labeled a narcissist by his many haters; however, loyal Trumpists don’t see self-absorption and over-confidence at all. They see a strong, confident businessman who’s disliked by many simply because he refuses to be anyone’s puppet—especially the U.S. government’s puppet.

At the same time, we can’t deny the many accolades Trump publicly gives himself—and the fact that many of those self-directed compliments seem a bit…inflated. The former President is well-known for making remarks about his great intelligence, his high-level business savvy, and even his killer good looks. According to Business Insider (2019), Trump sent over 2,000 Tweets that involved self-praise.

The self-promotion continued into his presidency and those 2,000 Tweets would have likely increased exponentially by now if he hadn’t been kicked off of Twitter after the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. However, just days ago, Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, restored Donald Trump’s Twitter account after nearly 2 years—which is likely decades in Trump time given the fact that Tweeting seemed to be the former President’s favorite means of communicating to the masses.

Mental health professionals weigh in.

“Outlandish, brash, and belligerent” — according to Psychology Today, many mental health professionals have opined that Trump’s behaviors are very similar to that of individuals with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. An astounding 70,000 mental health professionals reportedly signed a petition warning the general public about Trump. Naysayers claim that it’s inappropriate for any mental health professional to diagnose someone without personally evaluating them. This is true, but it doesn’t mean that qualified mental health professionals can’t observe Mr. Trump and infer the possibility of a personality disorder.

Behavioral observations are a thing in clinical evaluations and diagnoses and Trump has given us plenty to observe throughout his business career, television and celebrity stints, and then later on when he hit the political campaign trail. Remember, Trump shows all his ”character and personality” cards. He doesn’t hold back when the impulse sweeps over him to do and say whatever is on his mind. This gives us all—mental health professionals and lay people alike—ample opportunity to hypothesize, theorize, and philosophize about the character that is Donald Trump.
